Being Perfect is Not an Option

Why we don’t have to be perfect…

This is a call to all of those perfectionists out there, all of the people pleasers, all of the people who set unrealistic goals for themselves. We must understand that no matter how hard we try we will never be perfect! Nobody’s perfect! We will never be perfect people, spouses, friends, employees, students, parents or Christians. So often we aim for perfection knowing it is an unreachable goal. Setting unreachable goals for ourselves is exhausting and it is not how God meant for us to live. God designed the world’s greatest rescue plan because He knew we are unable to be perfect, but He loved us so much. So much that He sent His perfect son to wash away all of our mistakes, shame and sin. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

Before Jesus’ death on the cross, Heaven, salvation and a relationship with God were all unreachable goals. God cannot be in the presence of sin because He, Himself is perfect and pure. We let evil into humanity causing the road to salvation to be impossible. The world was broken with sin and shame, it was hopeless. Even though we are full of sin, God wanted to be with us, He wanted us to be able to access His freedom.

Jesus was sent to suffer a hopeless death so we could be free from the chains of perfection, the chains of shame and the chains of sin. When Jesus willingly died on the cross for us, we were wiped clean of sin. Once we are saved, God sees us as He sees Jesus. He knows our sin, but He sees perfection. Jesus’ perfection washed away our past, present and future mistakes. “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20).

When we understand that it is through our weakness that we can be strengthened, when we understand that we are saved only by grace, when we understand that there is nothing we could do to make God love us more or love us less, then we can live freely. “It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” (Psalms 18:32). If we apply Psalms 46:10, “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God…” we can go through life unafraid of failure because we are walking right beside the only perfect being to ever exist.

Don’t aim for perfection in this life, aim for Jesus. Walk by Jesus and use every mistake as an opportunity and a reminder that you are free. We are not perfect, but Jesus made it so we don’t have to be.

Equality is Christian

I want to share a belief of mine that is very close to my heart. I believe, many times, this core belief of equality in Christianity is taken out of the picture. This is the belief that all people are created equal. Anyone who disagrees with this must not truly know who Jesus is. Because […]

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello everyone Happy Thanksgiving! I don’t know about you, but I love this one day that it is socially acceptable to stuff your face until you can’t move. On Thanksgiving I am thinking about the turkey, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and then the black Friday deals. So, I often forget what today is really […]
