Putting God First
Putting God first is so important to living a life for God and being able to live out the divine plans He has for us. But putting God first is much easier said than done. I know I struggle a lot with this. I’ve come to learn that putting God first has to be “a way of life” or a perspective in life. Meaning putting God first is simply choosing to put God in all aspects of our lives. It is making sure that we are not hiding from God in any area. Putting Him first is also going to God first!
This can be so difficult when we are looking for quick advice, but we must understand that going to God with our problems is so much more valuable than anything else because He is the one that will resolve it. He is the one with good and perfect plans for your life.
So How Do We Actually Put God First?
- Dive into His word as much as possible
- Think about the areas in your life that you’re leaving Him out
- Go to Him first
- Know His ability and power in your life
Combining these four things will help you to allow yourself to have a God-centered life and a Kingdom-focused purpose.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” Matthew 6:33
Dive into His word as much as possible
The Bible is our guidebook in life, it has everything that we need to know. It is also our hope and a love story between our amazing God and humans. In order to put God at the center of our lives, we must first know God and His nature. We must have confidence in the fact that we have a relationship with God that cannot be broken. By developing a schedule where you are into the Bible in one way or another every day, you will be able to hold those words in your heart. By doing this we are able to use His living and breathing word practically through every situation in life, thus letting God into every situation in life.
“I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:10-11

Where are you leaving God out of the picture?
Sometimes I struggle with this. I tend to put God into all of the “bad” situations in my life but leave him out of the good because I forget that He is the reason for the good. We must put God first, not only in our struggles but also in our success. Are there areas in your life that you haven’t spoken to God about, good or bad? God wants to be a part of every tiny event in your life. He knows you better than you know yourself, so he is not surprised by anything. Let Him in to change your situation, or let Him in to praise Him for your situation. Either way, let Him be there.
“The Lord your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
Go to Him first…
It is difficult to lean on a God we can not see or physically hear, but we must do it. We must trust in His plans for our lives. It is important to trust that He hears every single word of every single prayer we speak or think. The real kicker here is that we not only need to go to Him first when we are struggling but we must go to Him first to praise him when times are good or when we experience success. Because it is through Him that we are able to accomplish anything. Go to Him first… He will provide wisdom, peace, comfort, and hope.
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
Know His ability and power in your life
Putting God first can only happen when we understand that putting him first is the best thing we can do for ourselves, above all else. To be able to fully believe He is the best one to go to means understanding the power that God has in our lives. When we understand His power, especially versus ours, we can put Him first and go to Him first without a doubt and without fear that He won’t be there to answer. God’s plans are so much greater than ours, His understanding and wisdom is unfathomable, His goodness immeasurable, and His faithfulness unending.
“Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11
