What is Shame?
Really, what is shame? And why does it have such a big hold on us? In the Bible it is clear to see that shame is not some kind of punishment from God, in fact, it isn’t a result of anything from God. Shame is a result of sin. Shame is one of the multiple reasons that God wanted to save us from our sins.
“Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.” Isaiah 54:4
He wants us to be free from shame! Fortunately, if you have accepted Jesus as your savior you are free from shame!
Wait… So Why Does Shame Still Show Up?
You now may be asking, why does shame still jump into the picture even though I am saved? Well, shame is one of Satan’s tools. There are many times that he uses it well and is able to drag us down to a deep depression, forgetting all that God has done for us. The truth in the matter is that shame = the refusal of grace.
Obviously, when we do sin God does want us to know it is wrong but he also wants us to know that if we call out to him and ask for forgiveness He will forgive. That’s it… He forgives and forgives without holding a grudge. Jesus wiped our slates clean, and they continue to be wiped clean every day. So, when we fall into shame we are holding ourselves down even though God has already forgiven us.
Don’t Ignore What Jesus Has Done
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5
By falling into shame’s trap we are ignoring the truth in that verse above. We are denying the gift that Jesus died to give to us. We are healed, we are free! Yes, we will make mistakes but our goal is to keep trying time and time again to be more like Jesus. When we fall we can learn from it and move on. We can’t stay down and ignore the only real hope we have in this life.
God Does Not Hate You When You Do Wrong!
God loves you so much! When you make a mistake 1) He already knew you would, 2) That’s why He sent His son, 3) He will forgive you and keep forgiving you. He LOVES you with unfailing love!
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:17
“Therefore repent and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped out,” Acts 3:19
We’re ignoring the amazing message of the gospel when we let shame in. Grace is the result of God’s love for us, not anything we could ever do or not do. When we let shame in we’re letting Satan win. Jesus left the grave behind him, so we should too!
